Players bet into a central pot. If no one calls, the best hand wins the pot. Usually, a poker game has two or more betting intervals. After the first round of betting, the dealer shuffles the deck and then deals out new cards. Then, the same dealer deals out the cards for the second round of betting. For the third and fourth rounds, each player will be dealt a new card face up.
The dealer will have last right to shuffle the deck and to cut the cards. The deck is then distributed to the left in rotation. Before the game, the values of the chips are determined. Chips are usually red, white or green in color. There are many different types of chips, including those with a dark color such as two, four or five reds, 10 or 20 or 25 whites, and a blue chip, which is worth two, four or five reds.
Once all the cards have been dealt, the players begin to bet. The bets are placed in clockwise order. Those who wish to remain in the game check without making a bet.
During the first betting interval, the player who has the highest ranking poker combination has an obligation to make a bet. However, in later betting intervals, the first player can check. If the first bettor does not have a high-ranking hand, he can raise the bet, which is called sandbagging.
A wild card, called the ace, is available in some games. Wild cards can take any suit. These cards are sometimes referred to as jokers.
