A Beginner’s Guide to Making Basket Weaves
A basket is simply a basket that is typically made of stiff wood or consists of a canvas made of cloth that is closed on one end and has a handle on one side. Although most baskets are created from plant material, other commonly used materials including bales, grasses, horsehair, or wire are also used. Baskets, like all containers used for food storage, are usually woven by hand by professionals called weavers. The handles on the baskets may vary from type of basket to type.
In basketry, the individual strands of yarns are braided into smaller strands and these are then loosely tied together to form a basket. The most common size of a basket is based on the weight of the yarn. For instance, if a woman bakes cookies, she will usually use a medium size basket. However, when using plaiting equipment, the size of the basket could be larger. Medium size baskets can be found in many craft stores or online. One of the most popular types of baskets is a simple square basket.
When using a plaited basket for headbands, the fabric is first split into three equal strips. The strips of fabric are then each plaited into six, four, or three strips depending on the desired pattern. The desired pattern is typically a seed, heart, floral, or vine. After the six or so strips are cut into smaller pieces, the squares are laid face down onto a board or a platter with thinset sand paper applied to each square.
Using a needle, the left over strips are passed through the thicket sandpaper, which removes any loose fibers, then the pieces are laid out flat. The desired seed is then placed in the center of the square of plaits and any extra strips are placed around the seed. The finished product will have two rounded sides and a flat back.
Using a thread that has been plaited into headbands is very similar to how an ordinary headband is made. The main difference is the type of material that is being used to make the headbands. Typically, a plastic or glass ball is first heated until pliable, then the individual threads are drawn through the melted ball. After the threads are drawn through the ball, they are laid out flat on the board or platter. Once the strands are evenly spaced, the fabric on the headband is added and any extra strands are pulled through the hook and loop. The finished product will have two rounded sides and a flat back.
While plaits and basket fuse are not the only ways to create headbands, they are two of the most common. Beading is another method of creating a unique piece of jewelry that uses beads, metal, glass, or anything that can be woven together to create a fashionable and stunning accessory. Whether it is a simple strand of beads strung together to form a simple headband or a more complex and detailed basket weave, the sky is literally the limit when it comes to making your own. Creating a unique piece of jewelry is easy once you get the hang of it. Just keep in mind that there are different types of materials that require different techniques for successful construction and you may need to experiment a bit to find what works best for you!
